Religious Education for Children & Youth: Frequently Asked Questions

At First UU Church of New Orleans, we offer our children and youth a safe, caring community of intergenerational sharing, respect, and joy.

We encourage them to grow into Unitarian Universalists who:

• can articulate a personal religious philosophy,
• are compassionate,
• feel awe at the wonder of the universe,
• and have faith that their positive efforts are worthwhile.

Our Director of Religious Education (DRE) develops and coordinates the religious education program in conjunction with our RE Team, which is a group of dedicated adults and youth who meet monthly to keep the program vital and running smoothly.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

Where do we go first?
Children and youth attend the first part of our Sunday Services in the Sanctuary, which begin at 10:30 AM. Our RE classes start when the children are “sung out” of the Sanctuary and head to the classrooms in the Oscar Flowers Religious Education Wing. Classes run until 12 noon.
What should my children wear? We generally dress very casually so that we are ready for messy projects. Most children wear T-shirts and jeans or shorts.
Do I need to register them? We ask each family to register each year; this helps us to adequately plan our program. Registration is ongoing throughout the year. If the DRE has not yet approached you with a registration form, ask her for one!
Is there a fee for Religious Education? No, the program for children and youth is funded from the church budget. We strongly urge all families to pledge yearly in support of First UU and all its programs.
Do my children have to go to class? Children of any age are always welcome to stay with their parents or caregivers in the service – see the welcome table for some quiet activity options. We support parents and caregivers in finding the way of being part of the First UU community that works best for your individual family. If your family’s needs are not being met, please speak up.
Can I help? You bet! This is a cooperative effort and we need your involvement! Teaching, assisting teachers, facilitating, helping with special events, planning intergenerational worship, sharing a skill, chaperoning a youth overnight, improving our space… the list of volunteer opportunities goes on and on.
