For the sake of my health and my wardrobe, I need to lose at least 30 pounds. I get frequent back pains, my get-up-and-go has got-up-and-gone, and I have a closet full of clothes that no longer fit. If these problems resonate for you, please think about helping me create a covenant group that will approach losing weight in a positive, spiritual, caring manner. The only times I successfully dieted was when I attended Weight Watchers meetings. Because I had to "weigh in" each week, I felt accountable to the group, and to myself. I stopped going to Weight Watchers because I couldn't stand the perky leaders and the repetitive format of the meetings. But the accountability is appealing. And borrowing from AA and OA, the concept of a sponsor - someone you can talk to when the going gets tough - makes a lot of sense to me. So my basic plan is to form an e-mail group of 10 to 12 people who commit to weigh in and report progress or failure to the group weekly. Each member would have a buddy, rather than a sponsor, and they would stay in closer touch, and offer support to each other, upon request. No judgements and feedback only upon request. If you want to share what works for you, fine, but no advice, please. And no (or very few) meetings. Please send me an e-mail if you are interested. If you have a buddy in mind, check with her or him. If you have ideas on how to improve this plan, include them in your note. First UU is my primary community, and I mostly feel safe with FUU members, so it's the logical place for me to try to form a group dealing with such a sensitive, painful issue. Thanks for your attention.
