This past Sunday, September 21, was a gift. First the service about the parallels between Unitarian Universalism and Alcoholic Anonymous, and all other 12 step programs, talked to me in a meaningful way. Rev. Melanie and her husband, musician Eric Ensminger, gave the service life, and then as a closing Eric, his friend Anais St. John, and our choir sent us soaring with the old Dionne Warick song, "No Night So Long" (Kerr/Jennings).
No night so long that you can't find the day // no day so wrong that you can't find your way // call on me like you used to do // I still can show you who you are.
For me it has been a long and dark summer. Many Sundays I have not wanted to get out of bed and come to First Church to be with the people I love. For me that is major, because my friends, as the last part of the song's refrain says "I still can show you who you are." ...and you, my friends, show me who I am. All of you and the work we do here gives me hope for a new day. Your counsel helps me see more clearly what is the right way for me and my work for our church. I need you and the church needs you... thank you for being there when I call.
The second part of the gift was the constructive work done at our congregational meeting in regards to our budget, our building, and all of the other projects we have rolling. We also unanimously voted to become a "Welcoming Congregation". For those of you who participated, you were great, and for those of you who could not join us, I hope to see you at our next Congregational Meeting on November 23.
Don't forget canvass is underway. Please take care of this church business as soon as you can so that the Finance Team can create a projected budget for 2009.
