Earth Scouts: Declaring Our Interdependence

All people between the ages of 3 and 17 are invited to join us this Sunday, December 2, as we start up the New Orleans chapter of Earth Scouts!

The Earth Scouts will gather on the first Sunday of each month, at First Unitarian Universalist Church during Sunday morning worship time (10:30 - 12), in the Oscar Flowers Religious Education wing. From time to time, the Earth Scouts will also sponsor outings into the wider world.

One need not be Unitarian Universalist to participate in the Earth Scouts! We could not help but notice, though, that the Earth Scouts principles and those of Unitarian Universalism are beautifully compatible.

From the Earth Scouts website:

Imagine a community where children and youth

* Appreciate one another's differences
* Have awe and a sense of wonder about nature and the cosmos
* Engage in making their school and community better
* Value independence and cooperation
* Seek peaceful solutions to problems
* Welcome new knowledge and experiences

Earth Scouts is a new national program developed by Earth Charter U.S. that inspires the above qualities in boys and girls from 3 to 17 years of age and engages them in actions. It is based on the Earth Charter: A Declaration of Interdependence, with badges centered on universal human rights, eliminating poverty (economic justice), participatory democracy, respect for nature and a culture of peace.

For more information, see Earth Scouts dot org, or simply join us on Sunday morning.
