One Book, One New Orleans - Tom Piazza's "City of Refuge"

"One Book, One New Orleans" is a city-wide effort to get everyone to read and discuss the same book. The book chosen for this year is Tom Piazza's "City of Refuge" -- a novel of 2 New Orleans families, one white Uptown and one black in the Lower Ninth Ward, before, during, and after Katrina. The OBONO campaign runs from Sept. to Nov. 13th, when the author will speak at Loyola's Nunnemaker Hall auditorium.

To link up the Greater New Orleans Unitarian Universalist (GNOUU) churches with OBONO, Rev. Jim Vanderweele of Community Church Unitarian Universalist and Rev. Melanie Morel-Ensminger of First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans will alternate leading sessions of a book discussion group on "City of Refuge" on Thursdays starting in October and ending with the event at Loyola. We're allowing lots of time to get a head start on the book so that we can jump right in with good discussion at the first session.

Here's the schedule:

Thu., Oct. 16 -- 7 pm CCUU Annex, facilitated by Rev. Jim (Please have read the first 100 or so pages.)
Wed. Oct. 22 -- 1:30 pm FUUNO, facilitated by Rev. Melanie
Thu., Oct. 23 -- 7 pm FUUNO, facilitated by Rev. Melanie (Please have read the next 100 or so pages.)
Thu., Oct. 30 -- 7 pm CCUU Annex, facilitated by Rev. Jim (Please have read the next 100 or so pages.)
Wed. Nov. 5 -- 1:30 pm at FUUNO, facilitated by Rev. Melanie
Thu., Nov. 6 -- 7 pm FUUNO, facilitated by Rev. Melanie (Please have finished the book or we won't be able to talk about the end!)

Books can be bought anywhere, but please support your local, independent bookstore if at all possible!

Invite your friends! Everyone is welcome!

Of Interest at CCUU

First Churchers may be interested in two weekly offerings at our sister church Community Church Unitarian Universalist:

Every Wednesday, 5:30-6:30 pm, Rev. Jim leads a Taoist Meditation group.

Also on Wednesdays, 7-9 pm, Rev. Jim leads a class on the book "Archetypes of the Spirit."

Both events are for interested adults, and are held in the CCUU Annex, 316 38th Street, immediately behind their original building. No registration is required. Everyone is invited.
